A New Year Ahead

The 2014 New Year has arrived and with the quiet time between terms I have been contemplating some big questions about how to proceed with my life and my art.  I am also writing some new articles for the Spiritually Speaking Blog, which will be published next week, and this always puts me in a reflective place. I have decided to teach more this year: workshops and retreats as well as weekly classes.  Opportunities are coming my way so I have decided to take them. I have been invited to facilitate drawing at a community art weekend in Prince Rupert in February, the Terrace Art Gallery is exploring having me for a week of teacher PD and community classes at the end of March and there are movements afoot for workshops in the Cowichan Valley too.    

The Morris Gallery will be closing in 2014 and I have decided not to seek another large gallery right now.  I have good local representation with the She Said and South Shore Galleries and large works on display at the Habitat Acquisition Trust offices.  I plan to show my new works at small receptions and invite those of you on this list those events on an RSVP basis.  

Some of you know that I have applied for a BC Arts Council Grant to create a series of paintings around the theme of ‘transforming pain’.  The grant would open possibilities of new venues to show the completed work. I will be looking at family history and secrets while exploring the subject of shame.  Yes, it will be challenging and exciting too. The BCAC will let all applicants know by the end of March 2014.  If I don’t get the grant I will be inviting you to support me- and will offer incentives- through something like ‘kickstart’.  It is important work and now that I have started I want to continue with it.

AND I am going to change my website to a new server, with a blog and some short lessons added throughout the year.  Technology has changed and my hosting site has not kept up with it.  Wish me luck with this too and leave me notes of encouragement if you like the changes.

The Cetus Society fundraiser is still happening.  If you want to ‘take a chance for the whales’ and offer your ‘line of support’ by making a $10.00 donation and therefore having a chance to ‘win’ the painting I did for them… there is still time.

My articles about Art as Spiritual practice are now posted on my website.  I will have new articles up in January.  I interviewed Nick Bantock about his practice and have written another article about rules.

AN ART RETREAT IN YOUR TOWN- Ask me.  I love to travel and can make a workshop financially accessible in almost any location.  It has worked in Neepawa Manitoba, Revelstoke, Terrace, Comox and soon in Prince Rupert so ask and see what we can work out. 

Private lessons:  if you are feeling stuck or just want to have some one to one instruction then ask me about private lessons.  I have limited availability, but can often do an hour or two and sometimes that is all that you will need. The rate is $60.00 for a two hour session. (Usually structured as 30 minute lesson, 30 minutes practice, 20 minutes lesson, 30 minutes practice then a 10 minute wrap up).
